Freestyle

Canine freestyle is a brilliant dog sport as it allows the handler to build a routine aroundcanine freestyle in nashville, tennessee their dogs strengths. There are no rules regarding which moves you have to put in the routine so you can be as imaginative as you like. Normally routines last for somewhere between one and three minutes so teaching the dog to pay attention is essential.

Although we have dabbled with agility and rally-obedience it is Freestyle or Heelwork to Music that has really suited me (Brigitte) and my poodles. The Poodle is a natural show off and with their coats and movement they can really bring something different to the routine.

canine freestyle in nashville, tennesseeIn the training of our dogs we only use positive reinforcement training methods as we feel this leads to a happy performance dog. Its amazing how quick dogs can learn with the clicker and some rewards. We encourage our dogs to retrieve toys from a very young age which also helps keep their interest in training as they then view anything we do with them as one big game.

Brigitte writes: I started in Freestyle with my Cotons in Switzerland about 10 years ago but it was not until I got my Standard Poodle Leeloo that it really captured me. We moved to the US partly because of Freestyle as I met a USA Freestyler Sara Nugent at a Freestyle seminar she was teaching in Switzerland. Through the seminar and translating for Sara we developed a friendship which finally convinced me to give in to my husbands long dream of moving to the US. We moved to Houston  where there was a enthusiastic freestyle community, centered around world renown Freestyler Carolyn Scott. I would like to thank all those people who helped me to develop myRay ray a toy poodle taking a bow training and confidence in performing in Freestyle.

Various friendships have developed through our association with this sport, one of our good friends is UK freestyler Richard Curtis. He wrote " Brigitte and her Poodles are just brilliant, I'm sure Brigitte doesn't Brigitte a canine freestyle trainer in nashvilleactually know what a good trainer / instructor she is. Our training methods are very similar and we both are always looking for the dog to have energy, drive and enthusiasm in it's work. Over the years I have known her she has started to teach classes more and I would highly recommend her classes if you wanted to get started in the sport." www.k9freestyle.co.uk
